Are folks really too busy to accept referrals?
Wow, hard to imagine in this challenging economy that anyone could walk away from or delay responding to a Class A referral! Referrals are the golden eggs of relationship building. To be instantly credible and go straight to serving your new future client and not have to sell them!
Yet, that’s exactly what happened to me a few weeks back when I gave a referral to a local professional.
It took this person literally a week to reach out to my friend to then say he was too busy and would get back to him even later! If business is really that good or you’re too busy to respond immediately, at least find a way to let the prospect know you’re not putting them off but it could be a while before you get back to them.
By not responding at all or extremely late you are not only sending the wrong signal to the prospect but you are diminishing the nominator and the value of his/her referral.
As they say it takes months to gain a client and seconds to lose one. The same applies to referrals. Has anything like this ever happened to you? Let me know your story!
